The device is mounted on the lift cage between two sections (4,4') the pawl (1) rotates on its pivot (2) under the action of a spring (8). It is retracted by an electromagnet (7). The pawl (1) engages a stop (6) fixed to the lift shaft and further rotation is prevented by a second stop (5). If the cage is not required to stop at a floor the electromagnet (7) is energised and the pawl (1) is retracted. When the pawl (1) engages with a floor stop (6) the pawl (1) is forced upwards and the top buts against the cage section (4) by virtue of the play in the pivot bearing (3), thus taking the load off the pivot pin. There are variations on the method of providing play in the pivot (3) and the actuation of the pawl (1). ADVANTAGE - The advantage of this system is that all load is taken off the pivot pin reducing friction and shear forces on the pin.
