The transmission system agrees an identification key when a connection between two stations is first set up. This key is stored by both stations and is used in all subsequent transmissions as an extra key added to the cryphotographic key used for encrypting and decrypting the data or messages. The identification key is pref. generated fully automatically and in a random way and is transmitted by conventional cryptographic coding. The advantage lies in being able to identify and authenticate conversing stations whilst still being able to use a cryptographic system based on once-only function keys. In fact, a once-only function key may itself be used as an identification key.
