On workstations or answering stations of switching systems, in particular multi-user dealing room systems, calls are signalled using a uniform system. Due to the special features associated with the operation of multi-user dealing room systems, different call signalling facilities are intended to be identified and implemented on a line-individual basis. By means of a specific operating procedure involving a keyboard, a line number, a line designation and a call identifier can be shown on a display. The information to be entered therewith is stored in a main memory of the switching system and is read out and decoded when an incoming call is received. The resulting commands cause, for example, a call to be displayed visually only, visually and audibly, or not at all. The method for identifying the call type of external lines connected to multi-user dealing room systems serves to create differentiating features, whereby increased user-friendliness is achieved and attention can be drawn to specific calls.
