The invention relates to a novel system for retaining and fastening glass panes on metal doors and windows and the like, and to the unit comprising two profiles which form the system, which is composed of a first profile for retaining and supporting the glass pane and of a second profile which supplements the first and is to be firmly connected to the same such that it can be released, to be precise by corresponding supplementing means for gripping and anchoring, for closing and improving the appearance of the first profile and blocking the glass pane. The two abovementioned first and second profiles exhibit corresponding and interacting extensions for fastening the glass pane, it being possible for the abovementioned extensions to be of any form as well as identical and symmetrical or different from one another and of a differing appearance, and it being possible for the abovementioned first and second profiles to be cut to length together by cuts at 45@ and to be connected to one another by conventional fastening means.
