When the oil is in the cold state, heat exchangers of conventional type often have the disadvantage of high resistance because when the oil is cold or at low ambient temperatures so-called "cold plugs" form inside the oil-ducting passages, thereby impeding the flow of sufficient oil. Forming the oil-ducting part of the passage from elements which have a part with low flow resistance ensures that at all temperatures a quantity of oil sufficient to supply the internal combustion engine flows through this area. The area with the low flow resistance may be accommodated either in the middle of the heat exchanger, on the inlet or on the outlet of the heat-exchanging medium. The arrangement can be adapted to the conditions of use so that the parts of the passage can be optimally matched to one another with regard to the ambient temperature to be expected and the oil viscosity. <IMAGE>
