In hydraulically releasable spring brakes for drive shafts, especially those of hydraulic motors, with a brake-disc ring which revolves with the drive shaft outside the hydraulic space, can be displaced elastically in the axial direction and is arranged between the motor casing and a brake flange connected in torsionally rigid fashion to the motor casing, displaceable elastically in the axial direction and loaded by a spring, the cylinder space required for the release of the spring brake and the piston are not formed by rotating parts of the hydraulic motor but by parts fixed relative to the motor casing. The seals required to seal the cylinder space relative to the piston then have a longer life and do not give rise to a frictional torque, which reduces the power of the hydraulic motor.
