A pressure-medium-actuated clamping element for clamping tools or workpieces in place is shown and described which is provided with a brake device on a pressure-medium piston for retention in the event of pressure failure. The clamping element is characterised by an expanding plug which engages in a rear, axial blind hole (8) of the piston (3) and has a spindle (9), a spindle nut (11) captivated on the piston cap (2), and a split brake ring (11) through which the spindle (9) passes. The brake ring (11) can be expanded against the circumference (13) of the piston blind hole (8) by means of an expanding cone (12) carried by the spindle. <IMAGE>
