A control device in which a comparator 13 normally compares a command value 2 with a feedback actual value 12 from a measuring unit 11 includes a monitoring element 17. Which detects faults in the unit 11 and responds by signalling the fault and/or operating a switch 18 to put the control device into a open loop mode. The switch may be restored after the fault is cleared. The control device can be used for electrically driven wheelchairs. If there are separate drives and control devices for each wheel, then the detection of a fault by one element 17 may cause both control devices to go own loop.
