A description is given of a knee restraint element for vehicles, in particular passenger cars, which element has a flexurally rigid hollow profile support (4a, 4b), which extends over the entire width of the vehicle below the dashboard (2) in the vehicle interior and is attached to the vehicle body at the side regions of the vehicle, and an energy-consuming, flexible deformation element (5a, 5b), which is held on the hollow profile support. In order to make the installation of a knee restraint element (3) of this type in a motor vehicle which, for example, also has a centre console, as simple as possible, the intention is for the restraint element to comprise two sub-elements (3a, 3b) with associated hollow-profile support parts (4a, 4b), the cross-sections of which are dimensioned in such a manner that the support parts can be inserted one into the other over a finite length to produce a positive connection. Expediently, the hollow-profile support parts (4a, 4b), which can be inserted one into the other, are still to be connected releasably to one another. <IMAGE>
