1,216,200. Multi-stage rockets. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM G.m.b.H. 29 Jan., 1968 [18 Feb., 1967], No. 4446/68. Heading F3A. A multi-stage solid fuel rocket for firing by means of a supplementary propulsive charge from a tube closed at one end, comprises an annular propellant 6 in a housing 1, and a propellant 16 in a housing 7, the outer surface of which housing is initially in face-to-face relationship with the interior surface of the propellant 6, whereby, disintegration of the propellant owing to acceleration forces is prevented by interaction of the rocket stages, the housing 7 being movable forwards in the housing 1 to an extended position in which it is still connected to the housing 1. The housings are connected together in the extended position by pins 11 engaging in bores 9, but can be separated when the propellant 6 is exhausted by mechanical or pyrotechnic means. The housing 7 is moved forwards relative to the housing 1 by igniting the longer-burning propellant 16 first, the flames from which ignite the thereby exposed propellant 6 after a delay caused by a combustion inhibitor. Alternatively, the nozzles 2 and 8 are closed with discs 19 and 18 and the housings displaced by firing a charge 20. A braking surface 13 also aerodynamically retards the housing 1. Fins 3 extend on leaving the launching tube. |
