In thermal printing mechanisms with thermal print heads which have individually heatable heating elements for producing individual printing dots on the recording medium by means of a thermal transfer ink ribbon (7), it is necessary for the ink ribbon (7) to be guided tautly in the printing region. For this purpose, in known thermal printing mechanisms, a ribbon tensioning device serving as a brake is arranged before the thermal print head in the running direction of the ink ribbon (7), which ribbon tensioning device has a pressing-on plate which presses the ink ribbon (7) against a guide. Since this pressing-down plate (56) interacts with the side of the ink ribbon (7) having the meltable ink, it must be exchanged from time to time for reasons of soiling. This exchange of the pressing-on plate (56) is facilitated according to the invention in that it is arranged releasably by means of a bearing arm (58) of a swivel lever (49) by means of resilient catch arms (63, 64) which can be engaged with catch lugs (59, 60) in catch notches (61, 62) of the bearing arm (58). The catch arms (63, 64) have actuating handles (75, 76) which are arranged so that they can be pressed together to disengage the catch arms (63, 64). The pressing-on plate (56) can be exchanged without any particular skill by any operator of the machine. <IMAGE>
