Treating jute to improve light-fastness and - remove surface hairiness

The light fastness of jute is increased and the surface hairiness is removed by delignifying the surface layer with a solution of Cl2, moist Cl2 or an aqueous solution of an acid hypochlorite, containing 5 - 10% available Cl2, at a pH of 6, extracting the jute with an alkali, alkaline salt or an alkaline reducing agent, in an amount of 5 - 10% (2.5 - 10% for the reducing agent) based on the weight of the jute. The treatment makes the jute suitable for making decorative and furnishing fabrics.
