PURPOSE:To prepare the solid or liquefied carbon dioxide gas without using a CO2 compressor and a refrigeration apparatus, by cooling an intermediate refrigerant by the thermal exchange with a low temperature heat source such as LNG, and contacting the cooled refrigerant directly with CO2 having lower pressure than the triple point pressure of CO2 in a vessel for phase conversion. CONSTITUTION:The valves 9, 10 and 12 are opened, and LNG is passed through the LNG heat exchanger 6 by the pump 8, cooled at about -140 deg.C, and recycled to the phase conversion vessel 3. Separately, CO2 gas is introduced continuously into the phase conversion vessel 3 by the blower 13 through the pipe 11. The pressure of the CO2 gas is lower than the triple point pressure of CO2, i.e. <5.28kg/cm<2>. The CO2 gas introduced into the phase conversion vessel 3 is brought into direct contact with the low temperature LNG, cooled at about -80 deg.C and solidified. When the formation of solid CO2 in the vessel 3 is completed, the valve 12 is closed, the injection of CO2 gas is terminated, the pump 8 is stopped, and the valves 9, 10 are closed.
