PURPOSE:To use a specific crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite or a previously modified substance thereof as a catalyst in bringing isobutylbenzene into contact with an ethylating agent and selectively obtaining the present substance. CONSTITUTION:Isobutylbezene is brought into contact with an ethylating agent (e.g., ethylene or ethanol) to provide the present substance. In the process, a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having characteristics of 2-5000 (alpha) value, >=1g xylene adsorptivity based on 100g zeolite, >=12 silica/alumina ratio, 1-12 control index, etc., is used as a catalyst to carry out reaction at 300-500 deg.C and 2.5-7.5 weight hourly space velocity and 2-8 molar ratio of isobutylbenzene/ethylating agent under 0.1-100atm. The catalyst may be previously modified by a method for combining the crystalline aluminosilicate with an oxide of P, Mg, B, etc., steaming or previously coking the aluminosilicate, etc. |
