PURPOSE:To obtain the phase difference detecting device which obtains a correlation value with conspicuous features and performs accurate phase difference detection by varying the amplification factor of a signal to be processed and performing correlation arithmetic again unless a correlation value calculated by an analog correlation arithmetic means has conspicuous features. CONSTITUTION:A couple of optical images generated at respective picture elements of an image pickup device are led to image sensors 10 and 11 and signals regarding the couple of optical images are read out as analog signals R(t) and B(t) without destruction and inputted to a variable amplifier 12. An analog correlation computing element 13 performs correlation arithmetic based upon a signal to be processed which is amplified by the variable amplifier 12 and outputs the correlation value H(L). When each level of the correlation value H(l) has no conspicuous variation, an optimum control means 14 makes the variable amplifier 12 or analog correlation computing element 13 vary the amplification factors of the signals R(t) and B(t) to be processed and perform the correlation arithmetic again. Thus, the correlation value having conspicuous features is obtained to perform the high-accuracy phase difference detection.
