Unsaturated esters are prepared from an olefine and a saturated carboxylic acid by passing a gaseous mixture thereof with oxygen at an elevated temperature over a catalyst comprising a carrier and metallic palladium and one or more of the metals platinum, rhodium or ruthenium in a weight ratio of palladium to the other metal of between 300 : 1 to 3 : 1. Ethylene, propylene, isobutene and butadiene and formic, acetic, propionic, n- and iso-butyric acids are mentioned and the catalysts are prepared by impregnating the conventional carrier with metallic salts, drying, hydrolysing and reducing for instance with a hydrazine-hydrate solution. The preparation of vinyl acetate is described. |
