In an apparatus for uniting mouthpieces 2 and tobacco rods 1, the aligned assembled components are united by a strip 4, by rolling the assembly in contact, at three circumferentially spaced regions, with the surfaces of three rollers 10, 16, 17 all rotating in the same direction and driven at the same peripheral speed, one roller 17 being located in the bite between the other two. The apparatus is particularly suitable for uniting "cigarlettes" to mouthpieces having an open cylindrical part, optionally including a filter, and a flattened mouthpiece bit. The components 1, 2 are fed in pairs from either side 5, 6 of a partitioned hopper 7 into grooves 9 of the roller 10 on which they are abutted by two cams 15 sited at either end of the roller 10 (one only is shown), while being transported to the roling region. The strips 4 are cut off a paper band 20 coated with a heat sensitive adhesive on one side, and held by suction on the roller 16, in conventional manner, and the adhesive is activated by means of electrical heating cartridges 28 within the drum 16. At the rolling station, an assembly 1, 2 in a groove 9 drops on to the surface of the roller 16 just after a groove 26 in the latter has passed, but just before a strip 4 arrives, and the rod 1 and mouthpiece 2 are brought into final aligned abutment by an air jet 31 that pushes the two components in line against a stop 30 that extends from the cam 15. After rolling, the united assembly falls into a groove 26 of the drum 16 and is delivered to a collection means 27. In another embodiment a conventional adhesive applicator for the paper uniting band is provided, and the top half of the apparatus, including the rollers 10, 17, is hinged to allow adjustment for cigarlettes of other diameters. The axial setting of the cams may be adjustable to accommodate different length assemblies. The rollers 10, 17 may be rubber-covered. |
