A sabot projectile comprises a projectile body having a cylindrical portion 2 supported in the rear portion 8 of a sabot 1 provided with driving bands for imparting spin to the projectile and being separable from the projectile in flight through the resistance of the air, and a tapered nose portion 5 surrounded by a plastics casing 26 having a frusto-conical portion which extends beyond the nose of the projectile to a front end closure of smaller diameter than the diameter of the cylindrical part 2 of the projectile body, the casing being arranged to break up and become discarded as a result of the spin applied to the sabot upon firing. The casing 26 is formed of foamed plastics and is provided with weakening grooves 30. A polyethylene cover 33 having weakening grooves 15 protects the foam plastics casing. In another embodiment, (Fig. 2, not shown) the plastics casing is spaced from the tapered nose portion and is closed by a disc (16) frangible by dynamic air pressure. The plastics casing engages a frusto-conical shoulder of the rear portion of the sabot and is plastically deformed upon firing the projectile and acts as a guide in the barrel of the firing weapon. |
