PREVENTION OF PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII PNEUMONIA USING PENTAMIDINE IN AEROZOL FORM

PURPOSE: To prevent/treat pneumocystis carinii pneumonia(PCP) without any concomitant significant toxic reaction by administering pentamidine in the form of aerosol spray with specific particulate size. CONSTITUTION: A patient subject to or already affected by PCP is administered with an effective dose of pentamidine; p,p'-(pentamethylenedioxy)dibenzamidine or a pharmaceutically permissible salt thereof (e.g. isethionate) in the form of aerosol spray with particulate size being 0.5-8.0μm in aerodynamic diameter. For the aerosol spray, particulates each 0.5-8μm in diameter preferably account for >=55wt.% of the whole particulates, and the mass median aerodynamic diameter is pref. 1-6 (esp. 1-4)μ; and the aerosol spray is preferably produced by the use of an ultrasonic nebulizer. The dose of the pentamidine is 1-200 (pref. 45-75)mg for preventing PCP.
