A seal unit 21 for end-to-end assembly with a plurality of similar units to provide an annular shock-absorbing seal assembly and for encircling a pipe 61 passing through an opening 62 in a wall 63 comprises a seal block of resilient compressible elastomer material, e.g. rubber, having offset ends 32, 33 through which extend bolt holes 34, 35, and pressure plates 36 and 46 each having bolt-receiving apertures 42, 43 and 52, 53. Bolts 54 extend through the bolt holes 34, 35 and apertures 42, 43 and through one aperture of an adjacent seal unit 22 when assembled therewith as a part of the seal assembly so that tightening of the bolts compresses the seal blocks of the two adjacent seal blocks to expand the thickness thereof and complete a seal. As shown, the blocks have a Z-shaped configuration and the plates 36 and 46 each consist of two elements 37, 38 and 47, 48 connected by pins 39 and 49. The shanks of the bolts adjacent the heads 55 thereof have a non-circular configuration to fit corresponding holes in the pressure plates and to prevent rotation of the bolts. In modifications, (a) the blocks have a substantially U-shaped, V-shaped or parallelogram configuration, the pressure plates being in one piece and cranked, (b) two blocks of semicircular configuration are employed, the pressure plates being of similar shape, and (c) the blocks 301, Fig. 16, of segmental form have pairs of opposite corners notched to form concave surfaces 301C and convex ends 301X.
