A device that partially blocks the openings in those reinforcing plates below the upper reinforcement is introduced through the opening in the upper reinforcement during a reactor shut down. The obstructing device remains in place in the reactor after restart, allowing the pressure drop of the coolant circulating in the annular space between the baffle and the core barrel to be controlled. Pref. the device consists of a shaft engaged in a series of openings in the reinforcements aligned in a vertifical direction.
