A nuclear reactor control rod comprises one or more structural elements (2,7,8) made of a zirconium-hafnium alloy of compsn. (by.wt.) 5-50% Hf, at least one of 0.1-5% Fe, 0.1-5% Ni, 0.1-3% Cr, 0.1-2% Nb and 0.1-2% Mo, and balance Zr. The alloy may also contain 0.1-3% Sn and/or 0.05-1% Si. An exemplified alloy has the compsn. 30% Hf, 0.8% Ni, 1.2% Fe, 0.5% Nb and balance Zr. The structural element may have at least one hollow portion contg. B4C powder and may be a B4C powder-contg. absorber tube or may be a solid element, opt. having B4C powder-contg. hollow portions or holes. ADVANTAGE - The alloy has satisfactory neutron absorption capacity and corrosion resistance and, because of the reduced Hf content compared with prior art Hf-based alloys, has low weight.
