Unsaturated esters with an alkyl group at the 2 carbon, such as methyl methacrylate, react with beta -aminoalkanols, such as 2-aminoethanol, in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide or hydroxide such as sodium methoxide, under moderate temperatures to form an amide such as N-(2-hydroxyethyl)methacrylamide. The amide is cyclized by a weak Lewis acid, such as ferric chloride, typically at about 220 DEG C to form a 2-alkenyl oxazoline, such as isopropenyl oxazoline. |
