The staircase is composed of side shafts (1) and tread elements (4) which may or may not have a surface finishing coating. The tread elements have a lip portion (2), a tread surface and an integral riser (3) with an upper flange (8) to engage the lip of an adjacent element. The treads include a channel (9) at their right-angled corner, which may receive a rod etc. to secure the surface coating.
