An avalanche triggering system, designed to remove a snow layer from a mountainside before it becomes dangerous, consists of a rigid tank (10) with a nozzle (12) facing down the slope, in which an explosive gas mixture is ignited. The tank is connected by pipes (17,18) to fuel gas (19) and oxygen/air supply units (19,20), and the upper closed end of the tank contains a remote-controlled igniter (29) to set off the combustible mixture. The fuel can be in the form of hydrogen, acetylene, propane, methane, or a mixturea of these, and is mixed at a rate of 1:6 with oxygen, air or air enriched with oxygen or ozone. The igniter can use a piezo-electric element or a flint to produce a spark.
