PURPOSE:To sufficiently remove the ruggedness on the peripheral face of a core so that the core diameter is uniformized over the entire length thereof and the control of the core diameter is facilitated by extruding a core-forming polymer having a prescribed sectional shape into a liquid and crosslinking the polymer by heat, radiations, etc., in said liquid. CONSTITUTION:The core-forming polymer 3 extruded from an extrusion die 2 of an extruder 1 is advanced into a bath liquid 4 heated to a prescribed temp. and the ruggedness on the peripheral face is sufficiently smoothed by the effect of the bath liquid 4 and is sufficiently and uniformly crosslinked by the heat of the bath liquid 4 to form the optical fiber core 3a. The core can be crosslinked and cured by the radiations, for example, beta rays, irradiated from a radiation irradiation means 8. The ruggedness on the peripheral face of the core 3a is thereby effectively removed, by which the light transmission loss is extremely decreased and the core diameter is sufficiently uniformized over the entire length of the core 3a. In addition, the core diameter is easily controlled simply by selecting the diameter of the extrusion die 2. |
