A soot filter system with a soot filter (3) incorporated into the exhaust duct of a diesel engine (1) has a bypass duct (4) bypassing the soot filter (3) and a valve arrangement admitting exhaust gas either to the soot filter or to the bypass duct with a first valve (5) and a second valve (6) which, by means of a control device (7), are actuated as a function of the exhaust gas temperature immediately downstream of the soot filter (3) in such a way that if a predetermined set temperature is exceeded, the soot filter (3) is disconnected from the exhaust gas flow and the said flow led in its entirety by way of the bypass duct (4). <IMAGE>
