PURPOSE:To obtain the title ceramic material improved in toughness, mechanical strength and oxidation resistance, by forming a coating layer consisting of metal boride-free silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride on the surface of a metal boride-contg. silicon carbide material. CONSTITUTION:The objective ceramic material consisting of a metal boride- contg. silicon carbide material whose surface is covered with a coating layer. This coating layer consists of metal boride-free silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride, and contains the whisker and/or grains of the respective silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride. This coating layer will prevent oxygen from diffusing into said silicon carbide material.
