The object of the invention is a drive device for the sowing or metering unit of an agricultural machine, with a carrier (8) which is connected pivotably to the machine frame (1) via a parallelogram suspension (5, 5') and on which the metering unit is mounted by means of its rotary drum (9) and the chain wheel thereof. An endless chain (17) runs via a driving chain wheel (12) fastened on a central shaft (11) which projects through a bearing (3) arranged in a holder (2) of the parallelogram suspension (5, 5'). The endless chain runs via a tension device and a sliding or rotating guide (18). Slipped into the hauling strand of the endless chain (17) driven by the driving chain wheel (12) is a compensating device (16) which is mounted on the upper bolt (6) of the carrier (8) of the sowing or metering device (9), on which bolt the pivotable pull rod (5) of the parallelogram suspension also engages. <IMAGE>
