In the cutting mechanism which has two cutting shafts (14, 15) fitted with cutting discs (16) and is intended for a disintegrating apparatus, in particular a document shredder, two electric motors (23, 24) are provided for the drive, one (23) of which is coupled by one end (14.2) and the other (24) of which is coupled by the other end (14.1) to one (14) of the two cutting shafts (14, 15) in terms of drive. The two cutting shafts are, in addition, coupled together at the two shaft ends by means of toothed wheels (19-22), as a result of which a symmetrical distribution of the drive forces on the two cutting shafts (14, 15) results which greatly reduces the torsional loading on the two cutting shafts (14, 15). <IMAGE>
