Paper possessing outstanding opacity, whiteness and gloss characteristics containing a magnesium hydroxide pigment having about one to five weight percent calcium ion concentration in solid solution therewith and methods of manufacturing such paper are provided. The pigment is contained either as a paper filler or as a component of a coating pigment composition.
