In the case of a device for drilling holes for dowels and other connecting elements in plate-wood or corresponding derived timber products, there is provided in a housing a drive motor which drives an output shaft mounted in the housing. A drilling tool for drilling the desired dowel hole is seated in the output shaft so as to be fixed in terms of rotation. The housing is connected to a footplate via a longitudinal guide, the guiding direction running parallel to the drill axis. In order to obtain an exact guidance of the drilling tool and a reproducible position with the aid of a stop template, a guiding bush for the drilling tool is inserted in the footplate. Two lateral stop faces are provided on the footplate symmetrically to the guiding bush.
