A ceramic composite body having a silicon nitride matrix is manufactured by winding a body from fibres and/or filaments of silicon carbide, introducing a mixture of silicon powder and a binder into the cavities of the wound body, allowing the binder to harden, thermally decomposing the binder in the absence of oxygen and treating the resulting body in a nitrogen atmosphere at temperatures of 1,400 to 1,500 DEG C to convert the silicon into silicon nitride. Preferably, the body produced contains 10 to 50% by weight of SiC.
