<p>A process is described for the preparation of the 1R-cis isomer of carbovir, [1'R,4'S]-2-amino-9-[4-(hydroxymethyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-yl]-1,9-dihydro -6H-purin-6-one and its physiologically acceptable salts from a compound of formula (II) (wherein R<1> is a hydroxyl protecting group) via a compound of formula (III) (wherein R<1> is a hydroxyl protecting group). The 1R-cis isomer of carbovir is an antiviral agent with potent activity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).</p> |
