A reinforced metal matrix composite is made by winding a continuous elongate, flexible reinforcing material (7) onto a substrate (5), e.g. by rotating the latter, and simultaneously directing an atomised spray (4) of molten metal (2) at the substrate so that the reinforcing material becomes incorporated into a matrix of the metal as the latter solidifies. If desired, the reinforcing material may be constrained to hold it in place whilst the metal solidifies. The reinforcing material may be in the form of a mesh and may be metallic e.g. Cu and steel mesh, or a wire or filament e.g. steel, carbon fibre, silicon carbide, boron. The matrix metal may be aluminium (alloy), steel, zinc, nickel alloy or titanium alloy, atomised by jets of cold gas such as nitrogen.

|
