<p>A stand for a portable article (e.g. golf bag 60), the stand comprising: a support (2) for the article; at least three legs (4, 6) connected to the support, each leg having an end (36, 38) for engagement with the ground, the legs being relatively movable between a first configuration in which the ground-engaging ends are relatively close together and the stand is accordingly relatively compact and a second configuration in which the ground-engaging ends are relatively far apart and are disposed at the vertices of a polygon so that when said ends engage with the ground the stand can rest stably on the ground; and means (14, 20, 32, 48, 52) for moving the legs from their first configuration to their second configuation when the ground-engaging end (36) of one of the legs (4) is engaged with the ground. The latter engagement causes support (24) of leg (4) to slide upwardly relative to support (2) and against spring bias to cammingly cooperate with units of legs (6) to pivot legs (6) outwardly to the second configuration. Instead of a cam, a rack-and-pinion mechanism may be used. The stand may be made from a combination of materials, eg. metal, glass fibre and plastic. <IMAGE></p> |
