A base for chairs and similar articles comprising a metal frame having a central ring member (11) and peripheral spokes (15) radially extending from said central ring (11); a plastic sleeve (12) having a downwardly tapering conical internal surface (13) is fitted into said ring member (11) and holding means (19; 23, 24; 25, 16) are provided for preventing the sleeve (12) from slipping out of the central ring member (11).
