A hand scanning type image input and output device includes a main body (1) to be moved by hand over and thereby to scan an object, such as a manuscript, and having an enclosed readout head (17) to read out information on a desired portion of the object via an opening (4) formed in the surface of the main body which is tightly contacted with the object. A movable roll (7) is reciprocably supported on the surface of the main body (1) in which the read-out opening (4) is formed, and a travel guide section (8) is rotatably mounted to the main body (1). A mounting reference surface (6) for the object is formed on the perimeter of the read-out opening (4) and the movable roll (7) is rotated in synchronism with a detecting unit to detect the distance traversed by the main body (1).
