A shutter allows measuring or operating apparatus to be inserted into an enclosure containing hot gas under pressure. A heavy shutter, inside the enclosure, mounted to pivot about an horizontal axis is held closed in a vertical position by its own weight. It may be opened by the apparatus being put in place, or by an independent pusher, operated from outside the enclosure. It closes again under its own weight when the apparatus is removed. Compressed air nozzles produce a curtain of air across the opening, at the base of fixings for the apparatus or a closing plug. USE/ADVANTAGE - This shutter may be used for blast furnaces, for steel making, metallurgical, cement making, or ceramic furnaces. A particular use is blast furnaces equipped with plasma torches, where it allows a torch or an injection tube to be removed for repair, and replaced by a spare without interrupting the operation of the furnace. The air curtain protects operators during the opening and closing of the shutter.
