An electromagnetic collar is fitted around piping conveying steam from the boiler to the electricity generating turbine of a power station, and operates in conjunction with an annular trap fitted inside the pipe. When the electromagnet is energised, particles of iron oxide scale, which may have broken away from the boiler tubes, are deflected from the flow of steam by the field, and collect in the annular space. A series of magnets having different predetermined strengths may be fitted along the steam pipe to collect scale particles of different size. Branch pipes are connected to the collection zones, and enable accumulated debris to be transferred to tank, preferably by opening valve with valve closed. Operation of the electromagnets is preferably automatically linked to start-up or load cycling conditions.
