Repellant compsns. for application to the soil contain an alkyl mercaptan, esp. ethyl mercaptan (I), and a cpd. having a phenyl gp., esp. phenyl chloride (II), the compsn. being water soluble and the wt. ratio mercaptan:phenyl cpd. being 0.2-10:1000. Pref. to make the compsn. more water-soluble, they may also contain an alcohol, 30-60 pts. of alcohol used per pt. of mercaptan. The compsns., which may also contain a dye, are diluted with water, giving a soln. up to 5%, and sprayed on to the soil at a rate of 0.2-5 ml of prod. per sq. m. Applied to the soil, the compsn. repel burrowing mammals, esp. moles.
