The ultrasonic detector comprises a transmitter and a receiver for ultrasonic waves and a conical reflection surface disposed in the vicinity of the transmitter for reflection of the ultrasonic waves, in order to obtain a detection field of predetermined dimensions. In the vicinity of the receiver a conical reflection surface is disposed for determining the area within which the ultrasonic waves are reflected back to the receiver. The transmitter and receiver are integrated into a transmitter/ receiver unit. The transmitter/receiver unit is disposed in lying position while the conical reflection surface is located above it. The reflections from the moving teat measured by the ultrasonic sensors (52, 69, 71) are converted into sampled digital values/delta x, delta y) being relative position coordinates w.r.t. the sensors.
