An optical communications system has a rare earth (e.g. erbium) doped fibre amplifier coupling an optical transmitter to an optical receiver and pumped by an optical pump. The gain of the amplifier is of sufficient magnitude and distribution to overcome substantially only the distributed intrinsic absorption of the fibre amplifier.
