A support for a cargo hatch cover (7) of a ship is described. The support is arranged between the hatch cover (7) and the margin of the hatch (13) and is attached to one of these parts. In this arrangement, the support serves to transmit forces from the hatch cover to the hull, the hatch cover and the hull move relative to one another in rough seas, and the support is provided with a guide (1) in the support frame (2, 4) to permit this movement. If the cargo hatch cover slips relative to the hull under a heavy load, the guiding or sliding surface of the guide must have a good coefficient of friction against the mating part. However, materials which meet this requirement are not strong enough to resist the non-uniformly distributed forces which result from the deflection of the cargo hatch cover. The invention solves this problem by the support being self-adjusting and being orientated at least at its guide side in the direction of the mating surface even if the hatch cover (7) is deflected. <IMAGE>
