TRANSMITTER FOR DIGITAL VIDEO SIGNAL

PURPOSE:To attain compression balanced in a spatial direction and a level direction by forming a selection signal based on a signal relating to a picture element period and supplying a digital video signal with a different bit number to a transmission line with a period in response to a period of the selection signal. CONSTITUTION:A video signal from an input terminal 1 is fed to an A/D converter 2. A 5-bit picture element data from the A/D converter 2 is fed as it is to one input terminal of a selection circuit 4 and a high-order 3-bit is selected by a selection circuit 5 and fed to the other input terminal of the selection circuit 4. The selection signal from the selection circuit 5 is supplied to the selection circuit 4 and the 5-bit and 3-bit picture element data are obtained from the selection circuit 4 in a way that are alternate in both horizontal and vertical directions and the result is sent via an output terminal 11.
