Gases contg. C, H and/or O cpds. with molecular wts. of up to 60 are converted to hydrocarbons, alcohols and/or phenols by compressing the gas to 1-6 MPa at an initial temp. between room temp. and 100 deg.C, contacting the gas with a catalyst, subjecting the gas to pressure pulses for 5-30 sec., and distilling the prod. under pressure. The feed gas may contain H2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH4, HCHO, C2H6, C2H4, C2H2, C4H10 and/or 1-3C alkanols, and is esp. a synthesis gas produced by steam reforming CH4-contg. biogas as described in CH671404. The compressed gas has a temp. of 250-950 (esp. 300-450) deg.C. A Ni catalyst, esp. Raney Ni, is used. Pressure pulses of 1-10 (esp. 2-6) MPa are employed.
