The invention provides for carrying out a thermal cleaning of coated workpieces in a hot sand bed, the heating and fluidisation of the sand bed being carried out directly by means of flue gas which is generated with a small oxygen excess in a burner installation integrated at the lower part of the sand bed and is forced through the bed at intervals. The flue gas is then drawn off together with the resulting gaseous residual products and passed to a separate thermal aftercombustion. The solid residues remaining in the sand bed are from time to time discharged from the sand bed by an additional fluidisation stage and collected in a receiver integrated in the housing of the sand bed, and discharged from there.
