The invention relates to a method and a device for balancing a cathode ray tube or a laser light source in a photographic composing machine, in which method the actual values of the recording beam are monitored, measured, and corrected in terms of its intensity by feeding a test film, which has been exposed with this photographic composing machine and has various patterns (gratings, grids) of different area coverage ratios and at least one solid, is fed as reference film to a densitometric evaluation unit, again arranged in the photographic composing machine, by comparing the density values thus obtained with the predetermined desired values and by these values effecting a direct intensity levelling of the cathode ray tube or of the laser light source.
