The cup tappet (60) incorporates hydraulic valve play compensation across a piston (18), possesses an overhead take-up plate, a cylindrical guide (66) attached to the underside of the plate, and a shaft (64). The guide is shaped at the end region (68) removed from the plate like the head of an annular rivet, and the shaft is provided with a ring-shaped projection (70) such that the shaft is held free of play in any direction. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cup tappet for IC engine valve gear. The plate can be hardened by a low temp. plasma discharge process which avoids distortion and the need for polishing.
