A composition of matter comprising hydrotalcite and Pt and/or Pd has been prepared by a process comprising the steps of impregnating hydrotalcite with Pt and/or Pd, followed by calcining and, preferably, treatment with a reducing gas. The above composition of matter is used as catalyst in a process for oxidizing CO to CO2, e.g., in a CO2 laser.
